Brass, cloth, and the shape of a spine

If you take The Classic apart (please don't) you'll find a very small piece of brass in the spine. Two, actually, sandwiched around a strip of cloth thin enough to see light through.
The spine is the part that decides everything. Fold it wrong and the lamp splays open like a magazine on a coffee table. Fold it right and it holds a full 360-degree arc, quiet and confident, without a hinge that creaks after six months.
Why cloth, not plastic
Plastic hinges are cheap and predictable. They're also, without fail, the first thing to fail. Books lasted five centuries by using cloth for the same job. We took the hint.
The cloth we use is a dense book-binding linen, the same class of material a good hardback publisher would specify for a first edition. It's rated to well over a hundred thousand fold cycles, which is roughly "every evening for ninety years." That felt like enough.
"Books lasted five centuries by using cloth for the same job."
The brass
Brass, because brass ages. Not in the sad, warranty-void way that bright-plated metals age, but the way a doorknob in a well-loved house ages: darker where thumbs go, still golden at the edges. We didn't want The Classic to look brand new forever. We wanted it to become yours.
