The paper we chose (and the twelve we didn't)

The first prototype of The Classic was, technically, not a lamp. It was a stack of paper. Thirteen stacks, actually. Each one a different weight, finish, and provenance, sitting on the workshop bench under a small brass reading lamp we borrowed for the afternoon.
We wanted The Classic to feel like a book you'd already loved for a decade: a piece that answered your hand before your eye. Which meant the paper had to feel right closed, before we thought about how it might glow open.
What "right" turned out to mean
Right meant a certain density in the corner, the softness that a cloth-bound novel has when you thumb the pages while thinking. It meant a matte tooth, not a gloss. It meant something that took a warm light and returned it warmer, not colder. And it meant a fibre that wouldn't yellow under a small LED after a thousand evenings.
"It has to feel like a book you'd already loved for a decade."
The one that survived
The paper we chose is a 120 gsm uncoated stock milled in the north of Italy, from a family who's been in the trade since before either of us was born. It's the same base weight used in a lot of the small hardbacks we grew up loving, the kind that sit at the front of an independent bookshop and quietly ask to be picked up.
It costs more than the alternatives. Considerably. But this is not a product that gets a second chance to feel like the thing you hoped it would when the parcel arrived. So the paper is where the story starts.
